Working with manuscripts

Manuscript assessment

You have written, or partly written, a manuscript for a novel, non-fiction, a collection of poetry, a series of short stories or essay. Now what? Does it do what you want it to do? Is it publishable? Is it reader-friendly? Send me your manuscript with your questions and I will read it with great care, and with attention to your intentions and ambitions. Feedback on your project is presented in a report.

Time: Around one month from delivery of manuscript. If there is greater urgency, this can be discussed.

Starting from $750

Developmental editing

This substantive edit takes in the manuscript holistically to assess intent and feel, sense, clarity and accuracy, flow and continuity. I suggest possible improvements for readability and presentation. Issues like point of view, sequencing, structure, cohesion, story arc, pacing, scene, dialogue and character development are considered.

Time: Industry standard timing: around 1 000 words per hour.

Starting from $55 per hour

Line/copy editing

This is an edit that focuses on the language of the copy line-by-line. Attention is given to grammar, punctuation, spelling, syntax, repetition, adherence to preferred style sheeting and light manuscript preparation.

Time: The time taken for this edit depends on the quality of the original copy received and the length of the script. Some scripts require lighter, and others require heavier editing. Industry standard is around 2 000 words per hour.

Starting from $50 per hour

Proofreading

Proofreading is the last step taken to prepare a manuscript for printing or publishing. Other editing must be complete before this step can be undertaken. Proofreading picks up on punctuation, spelling and grammar errors remaining or introduced after the copyedit is done.

Time: Industry standard is around 4 000 words per hour.

Starting from $45 per hour

Translation

I translate copy and manuscripts from German and Afrikaans into English, and from English and German into Afrikaans.

Time: Project dependent.

Starting from $0.50 per word

What
people
say…

I’m a better writer and storyteller because of you. I’ve learned so much and I can’t thank you enough.

Lesley Mofokeng

Let me once again pass on my gratitude for agreeing to do this; and my admiration for your marvellous skill at it. It is very impressive how you invested yourself in the project. I can see it clearly from your notes. When the full manuscript goes to the publisher, I shall insist they use you as the editor.

Mpush Ntabeni

This letter could have focused on your clever techniques, thought-provoking questions, your gentle humour, or the gift of your presence in my life during those three months. Those made the process fun, but what made it truly worthwhile is the fruit that is still growing and evolving a year later.

Craig Stewart

Meeting me where I was and coaching me through not just writing, but the life of a writer, has been a game-changer.

Gabe de Larch

I remain eternally grateful that Na’eemah assigned you to edit as I found you to be  sensitive to so much more than story and unafraid of reaching into dreams, myth, psyche, symbols and philosophy.

Bronwyn Davids

What an incredible report. Your comments conveyed a deep understanding of what I’m trying to achieve, while tactfully identifying everything that makes me feel it’s not ‘ready’.

I loved your comments. I love the challenges you have set me. My head may have hoped for a quick fix, but my heart knew that’s not what it needed. If you’d offered that, I would have been left with the same feeling of dissatisfaction I already have with the manuscript.

I cried tears of joy reading your words! I felt you understood the themes and intention of this story. You’ve empowered me with tools to make amazing and powerful changes, and reinforced that women need and will relate to this story.

Kylie Khourie

You’ve been an integral part of Curro Create’s writing mentorship programme and you are always our first choice. Your ability to engage with young writers—regardless of their starting point—is nothing short of inspirational. Your mentorship notes are succinct yet profoundly impactful, helping young poets and short story writers find their voice and refine their craft. As a mentor in our Advanced Mentorship Programme, you’ve guided some of the most exceptional work we’ve seen, shaping not just talented writers but deeply thoughtful individuals. Your influence endures far beyond the mentorship period; young writers reaching out years later to share how life-changing your guidance has been. Thank you.

Hennie van Greunen
Wordsmith’s Theatre Factory

This was not an easy project—the content, as well as the topsy-turvy deadline-skipping process of staggered submissions—but your professionalism and calm helped salvage what would otherwise have been a much more challenging process. I haven’t worked with such a methodical, scrupulous, level-headed editor before. Your professionalism is valued and appreciated.
